STORY
The main intention of Sunday School is to provide children with education in the history of the Church and the Bible. We seek to cultivate character that fosters virtuous behavior. The Sunday School format was developed in late 1964 under the name “Orthodox Sunday School Association of the East” (OSSAE). Our Sunday School, like others in OSSAE, conducts church-level, area-level, and diocese-level activities.
St. Mary’s Sunday School began in May 1991, coinciding with the founding of St. Mary’s Church. Since then, the Sunday School has remained active and has functioned according to the guidelines established by the Northeast American Diocese. A dedicated team of teachers and substitutes handles classes ranging from Pre-K through Grade 12.
ACTIVITIES
Sunday School classes are held every Sunday after the Holy Qurbana. A typical Sunday School day begins with a General Session in which students learn songs, prayers, liturgy, important dates, and hymns. After the General Session, each class meets with its teacher.
Extracurricular activities are conducted throughout the year, such as Bala Balika Samajam, the Orthodox Vacation Bible School (OVBS), Bible Read and Study (BRS) assignments, the Annual Talent Competition, and the Christmas Day Celebration, which includes a variety of Christian-themed programs presented by each class or group.
